2010 Club Tennis Championship.................
Green Island Country Club Tennis Championships
June 1 through September 30
Deadline to enter: May 28, 2010
Welcome to the 2010 Club Tennis Championships. Last year’s event had over 50 participants. Let’s make this year’s event bigger and better! The entry fee for this year’s event is $75++ person and includes:
· Play in as many events as you wish
· Etched crystal mugs for all winners
· Kevin Waldeck gift for all participants
· Season ending gourmet dinner in the Swan Room on Friday, October 8
Remember that like last year all matches will be played like a flex-league. That means you contact your opponent and schedule at mutual convenience. Also you can play in as many events as you like. For example, a 3.5 player might want to enter singles, doubles, and mixed but also play up in 4.0 doubles with a friend. You can only play up and cannot move down to play in a lower level.
We think the season ending dinner will be the tennis event of the year so mark October 8 on your calendar. While the dinner will be free to all tournament players you will be able to bring non-playing guests for a nominal cost to be announced later.
Enclosed are a tournament entry form (please be sure to include your size for the gift) and rules of play. The Swan Room dinner menu is detailed below:
October 8th, Swan Room – 6:30 p.m.
Appetizer: Poached Orange Roughy with Scallop Mousse on Lobster Sauce with Sundried Tomato Cous Cous
Salad: Leek and Blue Cheese Tart on Baby Arugula in Almond Pesto Vinaigrette
Entrée: Madagascar Pepper Crusted Filet Mignon and Garlic Roasted Langoustine with Potato Croquette, Cognac Sauce and Baby Vegetables
Dessert: Chocolate Praline Cake Layered with Raspberry Sauce served with Macerated Berries
GICC Club Tennis Championships Rules of Play
· All matches will be 2 sets, tiebreaker at 6-6 (first to 7, win by 2); if sets are split, a match tiebreaker will be played (first to 10, win by 2)
· Entry fee allows you to play in as many events as you wish
· Participants must be 19 years or older
· Opponents will both bring a can of balls and the winner keeps the new can
· Match results will not be considered completed until they are reported to the Tournament Director at hbanaszak@greenislandcc.org
· All matches must be completed by September 30 at which time the tournament results will be determined
· Tournament winners will be determined by: 1) most matches won; 2) head to head winner; 3) playoff
· Matches played after September 30 will not count in the final tally
· The tournament director will publish all match results in the weekly tennis e-mail; updated flight standings will be posted in the same e-mail

The Winners !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
On Wednesday, November 18 about 40 tennis players gathered at the courts to celebrate the recently completed Club Championships.
Chef Morten treated us to a fantastic cookout complete with all the trimmings. We all played some round robin doubles for about 2 hours while he grilled and got everything ready. Appetites wetted by the tennis, we then sat down to enjoy the food and festivities.
The highlight of the evening was the awards ceremony recognizing this year’s 14 club championship winners. Each winner was presented with a championship glass with the club logo and player’s name and flight etched on it. The glasses will remain on the “champion’s shelf” in the tennis lounge for the next 12 months. Champions will be able to drink from their respective glasses while at the same time commenting on the shortcomings in the abilities of their less fortunate fellow players who happen to be nearby. There was plenty of that on this evening as the winners raised their glasses in victory.
But wait…there’s more!! Photos were taken of all winners where they will hang on the tennis lounge’s “wall of fame” for all to see during the next year.
The evening was a rousing success. The cooling temperatures as the night wore on could not dampen the spirits of the group. The club and the tennis staff did a great job making the evening a success. We all look forward to a bigger and better event next year.
This year’s winners:
· Women’s 2.5 doubles: Sonya Eddings and Ann Campbell
· Women’s 3.0 doubles: Lindsay Hawkins and Alpna Arora
· Women’s 3.5 doubles: Rashmi Hudson and Julie Cabelka
· Men’s 3.0 singles: Akitoshi Kan
· Men’s 3.0 doubles: Billy Carter and Chuck Davis
· Men’s 4.0 singles: Raj Arora
· Men’s 4.0 doubles: Raj Arora and Mark Hudson
· Men’s 8.5 doubles: Mark Hudson and Ron Hale
Oh, and by the way…a parting word to you champions. “Don’t look over your shoulder; someone might be gaining on you!!”

Tennis Tips
1. No matter how potent your offensive game is, you need a good defense
to be a competitive player.
2. When stretched for a ball, do not go for the dramatic “big shot”. Just get
the ball back and make your opponent play another shot.
3. Avoid the temptation of going for the lines too early in a point.
4. When you get a chance to take the offensive shot, do not hesitate, i.e. a short ball
around mid court.
5. If you build yourself a nice lead, concentrate on playing even more consistently. It is
the mental mistakes and attempting the wrong shots at the wrong times that is
unacceptable.
